STERLING SILVER VS. STAINLESS STEEL
At first glance, they might appear to be one and the same, but when it comes to jewelry, sterling silver and stainless steel have a few key differences that make them unique. Our guide is here to help you look beyond the silver lining.

STERLING SILVER
Considered a precious metal, sterling silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, such as copper. Sterling silver was created to provide more durability and functionality for jewelry and is considered “real” silver. The high sheen gives sterling silver a neutral sparkle that pairs well with a range of different colors, gemstones, and styles.

Choose sterling silver if:
- You have sensitive skin. Sterling silver is hypoallergenic and unlikely to cause a rash or irritations.
- You want a precious metal on a budget. Sterling silver is more affordable compared to gold and platinum.
- You want a versatile look. As a staple metal for all types of jewelry, sterling silver bracelets, necklaces, earrings and body jewelry has a timeless quality that can fit right in with anyone’s jewelry collection.
But keep in mind:
- It’s a softer metal that can be susceptible to scratches and dents.
- It’s prone to tarnishing. But sterling silver is easy to clean, and some people even like the worn patina that develops on sterling silver over time.
- Although it is a precious metal, it doesn’t have the same premium reputation as gold and platinum.

Stainless steel is an alloy made up of a combination of metals, including at least 10.5% chromium, no more than 1.2% carbon, and nickel and titanium for durability. Often used in jewelry for body piercings, stainless steel has hypoallergenic properties that make it safe for people with sensitive skin. Stainless steel jewelry comes in many different styles and can also be plated to create a durable piece that matches your aesthetic.

Choose stainless steel if:
- You’re low maintenance. Its natural strength and durability make stainless steel resistant to tarnish or rust and easy to take care of.
- You like texture. Stainless steel can come in a range of finishes like brushed, engraved, matte and glossy.
- You’re on a budget. As a non-precious metal, stainless steel is much more affordable than gold, platinum, and even sterling silver.

But keep in mind:
- As a non-precious metal, the value of stainless steel won’t appreciate over time.
- It can be more difficult to size and repair because it’s such a stiff, rigid metal.
- Although it’s considered hypoallergenic, it may contain nickel, which can be a problem for some people.
